Thursday, April 1, is “Census Day” for residents of the Astoria, Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Long Island City and Woodside neighborhoods of Queens. Residents are encouraged to fill out and return their 2004 Census Test questionnaires now.

   “The information that respondents report on their forms should reflect the makeup of their households on Census Day (April 1),” said New York Regional Director Tony Farthing. “If the Census Bureau does not receive a completed form from you, a census worker will have to visit your household to get your information.”

   The 2004 Census Test is one of a series of activities the U.S. Census Bureau conducts in preparation for the 2010 Census. Before each 10-year census, the Census Bureau carries out these tests to evaluate new methods and procedures. The 2004 test in Queens is specifically looking at improving the way data is collected on race and Hispanic origin and at the feasibility of using handheld computers for collecting data.

   “Information supplied by residents is confidential,” said Farthing. “All census employees take an oath not to disclose the information they collect. They may be fined or sent to jail if they break that oath.”

   Census tests are critical to ensure a more cost-effective and accurate 2010 Census. For the Census Bureau to do a better job in the next census, it needs to find out now what works best in communities like northwest Queens.
